FRENCH RIVER BEAR OUTFITTERS
"Ontario's Best Bowhunting"
The American Black Bear is one of Ontario's most sought after big game species. Hunters across the United States and Canada
have long recognized the fact that bear hunting adds adventure far beyond that offered by Whitetail and Mule deer. With that
in mind, hunting Black Bear with archery equipment can be a successful hunt for individuals that are new to the sport as well as pose
challenges to more veteran hunters.
Black Bears are an extremely food driven animal and spend their entire life seeking food
sources. Whether it is the spring or fall season, bears will always be in search of food to replenish their fat and energy stores
or attempt to bulk up prior to hibernation.
Early in the spring season Black Bears are fresh out of the winter den. Their
thick cold weather fur makes for the nicest rugs and taxidermy at this time. As the season progresses it becomes closer to the
brink of their mating season and they begin to "rut" just like a Whitetail Deer would. Bait sites can then be easily compared
to Whitetail scrapes. Large boars will frequent bait sites more often this time of year attempting to locate sows coming into
heat.
In the fall season, bait sites are well established and hunter success is high. At this time of year Black Bears
are actively seeking food and preparing for hibernation. Also, with the weight put on by the bears throughout spring and summer,
they are at their all time heaviest.
